About

The story of the Vibram Five Finger Shoes started with this book Born to Run . This book takes accounts Christopher McDougall’s with a group of 50 ultra runners visit, to a tribe called the Tarahumara (Mexican Indians) in the Kalahari desert. The Tarahumara  live in the mountains and are reputed to be the best long distance runners in the world according to University of Arizona archaeologist Michael Jenkinson. In 1993 one of the tribesman age 57 , came first in a 100 mile race only wearing a pair of sandals ( called huaraches made out of old tire tread and leather straps)  and a toga and only ran the second half of the race twenty minutes slower than he ran the first.

This book relates to the new running philosophy of using bare feet or minimal shoes for running actually reduces running related injuries. It dates back to how we evolved as endurance runners to tire prey and hunt and gather food. Modern day running shoes use science to predict high impact points to our body while running and use extra suspension on those parts to stop injuries. This cushioning changes the mechanics our feet use to run with, and encourages a heel strike. Running barefoot , a runner usually lands on their forefoot to absorb the shock.
